Barn floors and wide-plank historic hardwood require a different level of expertise than standard residential refinishing. The wood is older, often softer, thicker, and full of character — nail holes, knots, saw marks, and decades of patina that most contractors do not know how to preserve.
Cruz and Sons specializes in restoring these unique floors. Whether you have converted a barn into a living space, are renovating a historic New England farmhouse, or are working with reclaimed wide-plank floors, we understand how to flatten, repair, and finish these surfaces while respecting their character.
What Makes Barn Floors Different
- Wide planks (often 4 to 12 inches) expand and contract more dramatically than standard 2.25-inch strip flooring
- Nail holes and surface irregularities require careful fill and spot treatment
- Soft wood species like pine require gentler sanding and lower-grit approaches
- Finish selection must account for wood porosity and desired rustic or polished appearance
- Historic floors often have uneven subfloors requiring leveling work before sanding
Our Barn Floor Restoration Process
Step 1 — Full Assessment
We evaluate species, plank width, existing finish type, subfloor condition, and the degree of damage or wear.
Step 2 — Subfloor Leveling (if needed)
Wide planks demand a flat subfloor. We address high spots and gaps before sanding begins.
Step 3 — Careful Sanding
Using our Lagler Hummel with appropriate grit sequences for wide and soft wood. The goal is to flatten the surface while preserving as much character as possible.
Step 4 — Fill and Repair
Nail holes, cracks, and gaps are filled with color-matched filler to your preference — visible character or seamless fill.
Step 5 — Finish Selection
We discuss your desired look: rustic and matte with an oil-based finish, or more polished and protected with a water-based polyurethane from Bona or Loba.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can you restore a barn floor that has never been finished?
A: Yes. Raw, unfinished barn floors are some of our most rewarding projects. We assess the wood condition and advise on the best sanding and finishing approach.
Q: Will restoration remove the rustic character of the floor?
A: Only if you want it to. We tailor the process to your vision — from a light clean-up that preserves patina to a full refinish that gives the floor a fresh, uniform appearance.
Q: Do you work on floors outside of Westfield?
A: Yes. We travel throughout Western Massachusetts including Springfield, West Springfield, Agawam, Chicopee, and East Longmeadow for barn and historic floor restoration projects.
